What is Fatty Liver?
The scientific name for fatty liver is hepatic steatosis. This condition arises when there is a build of fat in the liver. It is normal to have a certain small percentage of fat in the liver. But, it becomes a health problem once too much fat accumulates in the liver. The liver filters harmful substances from your blood while processing nutrients from food and drinks consumed and is the second-largest organ in the body. Side effects of too much fat in the liver are liver inflammation which creates scarring and worst-case scenario, liver failure. There is an alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
There is currently no approved medicine for fatty liver malaysia, but natural and organic treatments are suggested. There are several lifestyle measures to be practised that can help in reversing most stages of fatty liver disease. If you consult your doctor, below are some possible advice from your doctor.

- make changes to your diet

If you are diagnosed with alcoholic fatty liver disease, your doctor will instruct you to completely avoid alcohol. In terms of other lifestyle changes, it would be recommended to exercise to lose weight, eat a nutrient-rich diet that’s low in excess calories, saturated fat, and trans fats and exercise for at least thirty minutes on most days of a week.
You need to adjust your diet and maintain a balanced diet. Try to consume fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, and healthy fats and oils. Keep your focus on food high in fibre such as fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. While you focus on consuming these types of foods, do try to limit the consumption of food that have high levels of salt, refined carbohydrate, saturated fats and trans fats. Additionally, do avoid raw or undercooked shellfish that contain bacteria bad for the system and remember to always drink a lot of water to improve your liver’s health and stay hydrated.
Ultimately, prevention is better than cure. Therefore, there are several steps to prevent fatty liver disease and improve your overall health. Firstly, limit or avoid the consumption of alcohol. Second, manage your weight. Third, consume a diet rich in nutrients and low in saturated fats, trans fats, and refined carbohydrates. Fourth, for individuals with diabetes, follow your doctor’s treatment plan to control your blood sugar, triglyceride levels, and cholesterol levels.
